First Year Experience in Teaching Architecture

Teaching is sharing and gaining. As I start doing my new experience as a lecturer, I have some personal learnings to share. Exactly, teaching is also learning process. The more I teach, the more knowledge I get. I would like to start from asking some questions that I have been concerning.

How to keep student active?
How to motivate learning experience?
How to give a fair score to students?
How to lead the class to be an interesting one ?

....

Below texts might not be the answer to all questions above but it is a new step to learn from.

The first thing to do is to have the course online or course syllabus before teaching. It is a planning stage that helps to know about the content or what the expected outcome students can receive after each course. The expected outcome at the beginning of the class might be different from the final one. That is no surprise because you plan the lesson before you get to know your student. After processing the class, your lesson plan might be changed to adapt to what student needs in their level of understanding or background.

The second thing to do is to deal with nature of each student. Students always have different styles of learning and various backgrounds or interests.  It is the hardest part of teaching, lecturing, or mentoring. To solve this problem, it is easier to do with less amount of students in one class. Engaging students to understand their learning style more help encourage students learning. Jigsaw learning strategy is also recommended to help students learn in the group among their peers of different background and expertise. For example, forming three groups of students who will do a case study about Khmer architecture building, modern building, and classical building then after doing research, reforming other three groups of students who are from different research topic so they can share with their classmates

The last thing to do is to deal with student personal issues that affect to their study life. Some students might have health problem, family focus, financial issue, etc. that draw them not to be able to learn normally. Exactly, this point is the external factor for the lecturer to deal with. Some lecturers also choose to not concern about this. In this case, lecturers can seek help from school, or any policies that can support students with these conditions. For my personal experience, when I get to know about this issues from students, I will just encourage them to have a good time management and priority their work and focus.

These three points do not mean that it is the way to get an outstanding experience in teaching because there are many techniques and strategies.

I would like to pause this! Thanks for reading and see you in the next writing!
